Guided Nature Walk

Walk duration: 2-3 hours

Walk Overview:

This walk is aimed at anyone who has an interest in Nature. It is a casual walk, exploring the environment in the local area with an experienced Ecologist.
The walk will give participants hands-on experience of searching for signs of flora and fauna in the local environment. Participants will also practice their tracking and identification skills.

What to bring:

Please wear suitable footwear (good walking boots or wellington boots), long trousers and a long-sleeved top with jacket/coat and hat, if needed for sun protection and it is always best to have waterproofs with you, just in case!

Guided Bat Walk

Walk duration: 1.5-2 hours

Guide: Duncan Sweeting

Walk Overview:

This walk is aimed at who has an interest in Nature and bats. Join for a casual walk in the evening just before sunset, exploring the environment in the local area where bats hunt. The walk will give participants hands-on bat detecting experience in the local environment. Participants will hopefully be able to hear and see bats foraging.

What to bring:

Please wear suitable footwear (good walking boots or wellington boots), long trousers and a long-sleeved top with jacket/coat and hat. You will also need a torch and it is always best to have waterproofs with you, just in case!

Guided Amphibian Walk

Walk duration: 1.5-2 hours

Walk Overview:

This casual walk is aimed at anyone who has an interest in Native Amphibians and explores water bodies in the local area.
The walk will give you hands-on experience in searching for amphibians and will enable participants to practice assessing the suitability of various aquatic and terrestrial habitats for amphibians.

What to bring:

Please wear suitable footwear (good walking boots or wellington boots), long trousers and a long-
sleeved top with jacket/coat and hat, if needed for sun protection and it is always best to have waterproofs with you, just in case!

About the Guide

Duncan Sweeting has an interest in, and has worked with, East African, Central American and British Reptiles
and Amphibians for over twenty years. Duncan currently chairs the Suffolk Amphibian and Reptile Group (SARG) and Suffolk Bat Rescue. He is also on the Committees of the Suffolk and Essex Dormouse Group and Suffolk Bat Group. A Principal Ecologist, Duncan is a part-time tutor for the Field Studies Centre (FSC).

Duncan has been involved with several scientific projects – Radio Tracking adders for BBC Spring Watch, studying Chytrid fungus in amphibians, adder DNA sampling for the Institute of Zoology, the University of Oxford and Natural England, and the ARG UK / ARC pool frog project. He continues to work, run training courses and instruct on the UK’s Native herpetofauna for the Amphibian and Reptiles groups UK and in a Professional Consultancy.

Duncan holds Natural England, Bat, Barn Owl, Great Crested Newt and Natterjack Toad Survey Licences as well as Mitigation Licences. He also works with a number of different species of mammals and holds a number of talks for wildlife groups.
